Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 12

While the month of December is mostly known for its holidays, it is also my birthday month and in 2015 it meant for me that my last day in the office was 31 December and my retirement was celebrated. So this gallery includes a photo of my office with balloons. All other photos picture New York in a festive mood! We reminisced, because restaurants open and close and one favorite had been closed for some time now, so chances are it may not reopen. A very pretty Christmas tree can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, another one in the American Museum of Natural History. Even the food carts are decorated.

Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 11

November already! I thought to go and see my Midtown East neighborhood from another point of view, took the monorail tramway to Roosevelt Island and visited the Four Freedoms Park set up in honor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. You can also see the former smallpox hospital and the Queensboro or Mayor Koch bridge. On my way home, I passed the supermarket. The last couple of days of this month will be spent in Virginia. Enjoy Thanksgiving for those who celebrate.

Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 10

A day late, here are some photos featuring New York and surrounding areas in the month of October. We visited the Rockefeller State Park Preserve to see the fall colors, Soho to get a new pair of glasses, Carnegie Hall for a concert of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, strolling back along Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue. Getting nostalgic, when I first lived in New York in the 1980s I stayed for three weeks in the Roger Smith Hotel on Lexington Avenue. Another concert took place in the Metropolitan Museum. The United Nations celebrated its 70th anniversary in #unblue. An empty Broadway and the market on Hammarskjöld Plaza in fall colors. I made it just in time for the month of September. We enjoyed a beautiful dessert, a jazz concert across the East River, a day off and a visit of the National Arts Club on Gramercy Park. We saw the women’s final at the US Open with two wonderful Italians. We live in the Turtle Bay neighborhood, people moved into the new building across the street. For the first time ever, the flag of the Holy See was among all other flags at the United Nations. And last but not least, a little excursion to Dobbs Ferry and some flowers from the market on Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza. Fall is coming.

Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 08

Very late in the month, just in time for the eighth monthly photo challenge, hosted by Cardinal Guzman. We went to the Mostly Mozart Festival (3 x), ate Chef’s pasta in a restaurant close by, enjoyed Tudor City in the dogs days of August. Went to Williamsburg and Greenpoint, across the river. August has some car-free Saturday mornings. Fao-Schwarz, the famous toy shop, closed its shop on 59th and Fifth. Hammarskjöld Plaza has a farmer’s market on Wednesdays. And some more buildings that won’t be there, next year. I also took a panorama photo of Central Station, from the Apple store. All photos were taken in the month of August. It was still nice enough to eat outside.The building across the street is almost done and we had yet another beautiful evening.

Escaping the heat, we went to the new Whitney museum on the west side of Manhattan. On the way home we went through the Chelsea Market and Bryant Park. The last photo shows progress across the street. More responses on this challenge are here.

This month, it started to become quiet in our neighborhood. During the weekends, the city empties, which is nice. At the very end of last month, we had the first “Manhattanhenge” of this year, when the sun sets precisely in line with the streets from West to East. Also, the building which has been constructed over the last couple of years is almost finished. The scaffolding is slowly disappearing. So, one new kid on the block and one old one, which may be disappearing in the forthcoming year(s). More on this challenge can be found here.

Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 05

This month, I have included a walk on the UES (Upper East Side), and one from 16th to 46th Street on the East side, looking for the ESB (Empire State Building). Hello Kitty will be going to Amsterdam, some time in September of this year. And some photos were taken in Tudor City, which is Midtown East. Spring is in the air. Finally! So, all attention is on the cherry blossom, magnolia, and nice weather, even though it was extremely cold today! And more on this challenge can be found here. Till next month.

Monthly Photo Challenge: The Changing Seasons 03

March gave us the opportunity to go out a little more, despite the occasional snow storm, such as the one on 20 March. The following day, it was cold and beautiful. We had the opportunity to look over Central Park from the south and we saw this beautiful checker taxi. Today I visited a friend in a health care center on the lower east side and travelled back up again by bus. On the other photos you find the UN Secretariat, one of the Trump Towers, and some photos of Central Station, other than the main hall. Scaffolding is still around a building in our neighbourhood, but that should disappear within the next few months. Stay tuned ….
